If I Was... is a song about
obsession.
It had a 6 song EP named after it in 2000. You can see the
cover of this CD below left. Dwayne took the photo on a trip
to Norway.
if i was your
strawberries and cream
if i was the soap to keep you clean
or all your inhibitions
if i was purring like a sleepy cat
to be around you, i’d be all that
if i was the instinct to your charm
if i was the key to your alarm
if i was butter on your corncob
or twisted, like a doorknob
if i was laid down like a welcome mat
to be around you, i’d be all that
found a way i might make you notice
a little bit of something come undone
a little bit of something
if i was the last thing on your mind
if i was hanging from vine
if i was all that ever mattered
if i was ripped, torn, and tattered
if i was crumpled up and laughed at
to be around you, I’d be all that
if you’d recognize my eyes in eyes of strangers
found a way i might make you notice
a little bit of something come undone
a little bit of something come undone
let’s pretend for just one moment
you turn around, don’t turn around
i caught you watching i was dancing
sure by now you’ve noticed
i’ve been watching, too
if i was
if i was
at a sensible sense of danger
you recognize my eyes in eyes of strangers
found a way i might make you notice
a little bit of something come undone
at a sensible sense of danger
you recognize my eyes in eyes of strangers
found a way i might make you notice
a little bit of something come undone
a little bit of something
found a way I might make you notice
can you see
can you see me now?

Brett's silouhette at the Appel Farm
Festival
Elmer, NJ. July, 2002.

The cover of the If I Was... EP.
2000.
Jennifer Nobel and Dwayne Keith met in high school. Dwayne was
writing music, and wanted to get Jen to record some of his
songs. She was very modest, and declined, although she did not
mind singing them and helping Dwayne work on them. One day,
Dwayne snuck a recorder into the room, and taped anyway. After
that Jen agreed to sing on a demo tape to help Dwayne get his
songs published, and fortunately for the rest of us, just kept on
singing.
