The song Far is another in the tradition of poetic songwriting by GEG.  GEG has always been well known for thoughtful, delicate, and intricate lyrics. 
 

I traveled far

to a place so distant seasons
never changed at all
I returned last night

to feel the first cool breeze of fall

as I lay back in my bed

 

I saw the end

shuffle gently into view

and then turn back again

so surprised at my reaction to this tired friend and what I thought he said

 

just close your eyes and breathe the night keep your vision for another light

for the many of whom you'll love

that go to find a way

 

it feels so late

though I pride myself on certainty

I hesitate

and it's strange in Philadelphia

the city waits

for something new to find

 

I lose my sense

and the apathy that frightens me is so intense but I still can see the meaning

in the words you sent

"I've been here all the time."

 

so close your eyes and breathe the night keep your vision for another light

for the many of whom you'll love

like when we watched waves last September and all the other ones had gone

you said you felt like you were losing it I said I've been lost for so long
